چکیده

2014 The correlation between the intrinsic luminescence of solid argon excited by slow electrons (a few eV to 100 eV) and desorption was studied. Related to exciton creation, a sharp threshold of desorption and of luminescence is observed at the same energy of the impinging electrons. The desorption rate is proportional to the exciton density at the surface. The surface nature of different luminescence bands is established. The mechanism of desorption corresponds to the mechanism of cavity formation around self-trapped excitons in solid argon. J. Spectroscopic behavior of halogen photodesorption from alkali halides under UV and VUV excitation

The photostimulated desorption yield of neutral halogen atoms from KI, KBr, and RbI at several temperatures has been measured in the photon energy range between 5 and 30 eV using synchrotron radiation and quadrupole mass spectrometry. The features observed in the desorption yield are slightly correlated with the structures of the absorption spectra of each investigated material. The behavior of...

Monte Carlo model for the deposition of electronic energy in solid argon thin films by keV electrons

The motion of keV electrons in a film of solid argon and the depth distribution of ionizations and excitations are studied using a Monte Carlo simulation. This method does not only allow for accurate inclusion of individual cross sections but also for easy inclusion of finite size effects. We have analyzed the effect of the substrate on electron trajectories and found an important enhancement o...

Auger stimulated ion desorption of negative ions via K-capture radioactive decay.

We report on Auger stimulated ion desorption via Coulomb explosion from surface self-assembled alkylthiol and fluorocarbon molecular layers, triggered by K-capture decay of an imbedded radioactive 55Fe atom. The charge state of the ejecta is determined by charge exchange in binary atomic collisions in bulk and electron tunneling outside the solid, as well as by fragmentation of electronically e...

Energy Transfer in Solid Argon during Ion Bombardment

Solid argon is a model system for studies of radiative and nonradiative processes associated with electronic excitation by MeV light ion bombardment. The electronic excited states, excitons and excimers, have been extensively studied in this material and careful studies have also been made of the ejection (sputtering) of atoms from the surface. The sputtering requires transfer of energy from el...

Excitons and Radiation Damage in Alkali Halides

The quantum mechanical description of atomic spectra was the beginning of a new era of quantum physics which today is the theoretical basis of nuclear and solid state physics, chemistry, and biochemistry [1,2]. Quantum mechanics opened also a new look to solid state physics which will be illustrated by the development of the conception of excitons [3]. One of the basic quantum mechanical proble...
